Today is my dad's birthday.
My dad has always been shy and quiet, and, for twenty years, his expressions have gradually quieted even more due to the slow progression of his Parkinson's. He still has very good overall mobility, but his facial expression rarely changes, so now more than ever I have to watch for very subtle signs to hear what he's thinking.
I like this photo because, to me, it catches him on a cusp I've known most of my life: that split second before his mild humor and momentary curiosity turn to impatience. On one hand, I see him amused at and pausing for his daughter and her hobby. On the other, I know to put the camera down after this one shot, because his eyes are about to say: enough.
Poignant.
